Turn old into new: cost-effective renovation of operating tables
In the day-to-day routine of the operating room, you are often faced with a fundamental decision: purchasing a new operating table – or making targeted upgrades where it really matters. A complete replacement is usually the most expensive solution, even though the table’s mechanics and function are often still flawless. What actually deteriorates in many cases are the table tops, padding, and covers: visibly worn, more challenging to reprocess hygienically, and increasingly uncomfortable to use.
With the mediPlac operating table renovation, only the upholstery is renewed – the existing table is preserved in full. Turn old into new: your existing table system receives new, precisely fitted upholstery instead of being replaced completely. This service is aimed at hospitals and practices whose operating table is basically functional but whose upholstery needs renewing – whether the reason is wear, hygiene requirements or a changed positioning need.
We have been developing and manufacturing this upholstery since 2000 at our headquarters in Borchen in East Westphalia-Lippe, near Paderborn – for around 25 years, exclusively in Germany. Both development and manufacturing take place exclusively at our Borchen site, so the new upholstery for your renovation is also made there.

Why re-upholster rather than buy new
The most common concern among clinics and practices is: “Do I have to replace my entire operating table for this?” The answer is clear: no. During the renovation, the operating table itself is not replaced; only its upholstery is renewed. The existing table system, its mechanics and your familiar workflows in the OR remain unchanged – only the upholstery is exchanged for newly made mediPlac upholstery. This is exactly what “Turn Old into New” means: instead of replacing a functioning system, we work with you to modernize your operating table to meet your needs – with custom-fit table tops, high-quality surgical pads, and covers designed for the demands of the operating room. The result: a noticeable increase in comfort and safety during patient positioning, a more professional appearance, and a solution that integrates seamlessly into your existing workflows.
The economic advantage is clear: by extending the lifecycle of your existing equipment, you reduce investment peaks and optimize your total cost of ownership (TCO). At the same time, you improve process quality – because stable, dimension-retaining cushions and suitable cover materials support reliable patient positioning and simplify hygiene routines.
The new upholstery is made of high-quality, flexible and breathable cover materials that are bacteria-proof, easy to wipe clean and disinfectable. The foams used are matched to the respective positioning goal and patient weight. All materials are washable, liquid-proof and latex-free. In development, we follow the guidelines and recommendations of relevant professional societies.
- Cracks & porous seams – moisture and germs can penetrate
- Declining elasticity and dimensional stability
- Laborious, often incomplete cleaning
- Discoloration and unpleasant feel after years of operating room use
- Breathable
- Bacteria-proof & disinfectable
- Washable & liquid-proof
- Latex-free
Whether re-upholstering is more economical than buying a new operating table in an individual case cannot be answered in general – it depends on the condition of your table, the scope of the upholstery required and other factors. We cannot and do not want to give a general statement on costs here. We are happy to discuss your specific situation with you in a personal conversation and advise you on which solution makes sense for your operating table.
